5k The next time you need an EV charger I recommend openevse. It is open hardware/software. https://openevse.com/ I bought mine in 2017. It lives in my garage in MN. I have had to fix it twice but ordered the parts fixed it myself. I just ordered the esp32 based wifi module to upgrade the original esp8266 which will let me run new firmware with features I'm excited about. I just started using the HACS integration as well. I don't have solar yet but openEVSE has features for charging based on solar production.

5k OpenWRT as access point tip: by default if you connect another router to a LAN port of an openWRT wifi device. The openwrt wifi device will operate as an AP. However, if someone fiddles with it and forgets or doesn't know to use LAN port (vs WAN)... Better to configure as AP for permanent installs.

12k Thanks for the wake up call! I deployed Prometheus and Grafana and now I'm hooking up everything 😅 My TrueNAS, Proxmox, Unifi (there's a nice video by TechnoTim in yt), and Home Assistant. I have no idea what to make with all those data, the next step is to set up alerts I guess. Great episode as always.

22k I’ve been learning and configuring a new proposal software at work. When I hit a snag during setup, I wished for easier access to expert support, as waiting for availability didn’t always fit my timeline. To solve this, I set up an OpenWebUI knowledge base with all the available documentation from the developers. Now, I can ask an LLM questions, and it provides answers with citations from the documentation. It’s been working great!

20k We've started to do 'bowls' for family and friend gatherings. Each person brings a few things. Think of all the options at a Chipotle or similar. You can set a theme for the bowl like Mexican, Indian, Korean etc. It seems to work well for dietary restrictions as you build your own bowl. Also I think it allows people to put in as much or as little work as they want. The challenge is coordination, with small groups a group chat works but large groups you need a sign-up spreadsheet with categories.

19k I wanted to note that I appreciate your takes on the latest AI news 🙂 I deployed hermes to a VM in my proxmox node and started playing with it.
I'm currently using the opencode go subscription ( I picked Qwen3.6-Plus) which was $5 for the first month just to get the hang of it. I set it up with telegram, it's kinda surreal to ask your bot questions and see the reply 😅
I'm curious what models/subscriptions you use. And also how much "power" you give them to perform tasks on your behalf.

12k I recently started experiencing networking issues in my docker stack. Being that it had been around since the beginning of my home lab about five years ago, it was a giant mess. So I decided to learn something new, K8s to the rescue. And holy smokes, am I the only one that found it extremely difficult to learn? I still have not quite figured out persistent volumes and persistent volume claims, but I did manage to get olivetin running in high availability with two replicas and a load balancer! 5k PSA: Avoid HP 840 G9 12th gen Intel for Linux. I couldn't get any sort of low power state to work. Sleep battery drain was >10% per hour on Linux. On Windows it was <1%. I tried NixOS, popOS and Fedora. I put maybe 8 hours of troubleshooting in ~2 months ago but nothing made it better.

5k I just used opencode with their free model to unpin then remove a bunch of pinned but unsupported flatpaks. At work I've been using GitHub copilot for a year or so. So far it is just making me slightly more productive. However more important is I will more often try things I'm less familiar with because the cost of trying them is a couple minutes writing a prompt. For example I added dark mode to an internal JavaScript site on a Friday afternoon. It took hours overall, my 1st time using JavaScript, but the 1st prompt gave immediate results and I got hooked.

Just had a random thought it would be cool if instead of discontinuing the podcast, it could just be a merger of sorts with LUP just did a self hosted section as part of that podcast. Obviously, I may not understand some of the things going on in the background that would keep this from being a thing.

Sad to hear the show is coming to an end I am so thankful for the content and energy you have all invested into Selfhosted. In reply to Hybrid Sarcasms boost, OpenWebUI actually has a partial solution to a searchable obsidian vault of documentation with their Knowledge implementation. It's really easy to set up and works okay. Setting up a knowledge base in OpenWebUI can be done in the workspace. You can upload your entire obsidian vault directly through the WebUI and attach that Knowledge to a custom model based on whichever LLM you would like, ollama or API based. I only wish there was an implementation that allows syncing this from obsidian.
